The Upper Michigan River – Section #6

The Michigan River, a tributary of the North Platte River originates in a chain of lakes along the Continental divide just East of the Nokhu Crags. It’s a fairly fast river that averages 25 feet wide and approximately 69 miles in length.

The Club section is located 15 miles south east of Walden on the 3Rivers ranch. Due to the heavily lined willows our section demands careful navigation to get to the river in certain areas. Please make your way through the willows carefully.

This section of river usually has very consistent water flows due to Meadow Creek Reservoir. The reservoir dumps water into the Michigan at the top of the property usually after run off which keeps good water flows through July and August. Stoneflies, mayflies, craneflies, and caddis are all major attributes to the trout’s diet. However, terrestrials are the true ticket to catching trout in this section. Spiders, ants, beetles, and hoppers are all living close the waters edge and every fish in the river knows it.

Mostly browns and brook trout inhabit the upper Michigan. Great dryfly fishing for 13-15 inch Browns is the highlight of this water with many fish in the 16-18 range being caught each year. Streamer fishing and dry/dropper can be productive as well.

The Club section is approximately 4 miles in length. There are four parking areas, which are all located right off Hwy 14. The property is split in half by the main driveway to the ranch headquarters. The top boundary boarders the Johnny Moore State Wildlife Area so feel free to cross the fence and continue upstream.

Beware of moose in this area; speak loudly and make noise while walking through the willows.

Access to the Michigan River is by designated Club Parking areas only.

To access the upper Michigan River, Head East on Highway 14 out of town. Travel 9.6 miles down Highway 14 to Reach beat #4. The subsequent beats are just down the road. Beat’s #4-1 are all on the east side of the road.
