The Canadian River- Section #4
The lower section is very open. The first part has many riffle/run sequences running into deep banks. There will be some areas with beaver activity, which always hold trout. When approaching the river look for likely lies and make moderate to longer casts along the banks. The fish are spooky and they will spot you, so you must hunt them. Cover a lot of water and expect to see a lot of fish using this section early and late in the fishing season.
Due to the soil in the lower Canadian there is little bug activity. Few Caddis and mayflies provide food for the trout but sucker minnows, sculpins, and crayfish are the main diet of these fish. This section is a quality over quantity fishery and anglers willing to work hard can be rewarded with very large trout.
This section holds mostly brown trout. Average fish are in the 12-14 inch range but fish over 20-25 inches are caught every year.
